European Championship, Ungarn, 2014

June, 11th, 2014

The wind was the missing element on the last day of the European Championship. The fleet patiently waited ashore in the morning, and when little patches of breeze appeared on the horizon, PRO Bela Erdelyi decided to give it a try. It was another hour waiting on the water, but the wind would never build up enough for starting a race. So the standings became final with 4 races which means Hubert Merkelbach and Markus Koy (GER) earned the gold medal and became Star European Champions in 2014. Second place went to the Swedish duo of Tom Löfstedt and Jasper Sundman, and the local Gereben Brothers, Marton and Peter finished third.

No race

June, 9th, 2014

There were three races in light but steady easterly wind on a typical warm summer day in front of the waters of Balatonföldvar. Early morning the weather was very unpromising, the water was like a mirror. As the temperature was rising, wind arrived from the Tihany straits and lasted through the whole day.

The races were trickier today, the south side was not so favoured than it was yestarday. Some of the boats close to shore even drew some mud with their keel.
There was no lack of excitement during the races, many mixed results were born, however the German pair of Merkelbach-Koy were able to produce consistent top scores. With two seconds, a fourth and a third place they lead the standings. Second overall are the Swedish Lofstedt-Sundman pair, while the Gereben brothers are currently third, pleasing their local supporters.

The Championship is now valid after four races have already been completed. In case of 5 or more races each competitorʼs worst score can be discarded which can shuffle the scorebord a little bit. Considering the weather forecast for tomorrow, PRO Béla Erdelyi can only hope for the thermical easterly again in this early hot summer.

After several hours of waiting on shore the 31-boat fleet finally left the dock and headed out to the racecourse in a very light breeze. The wind forecast for the regatta is not very promising, so the organisers chose to start race 1 in super light conditions. It was a long and slow race and as the wind died after the first round it was a race against time, too.

The Austrian star doyen Albert Sturm had a perfect race with his crew Tobias Haring, they lead from the start and crossed the finish line first within the 3-hour time limit. Hubert Merkelbach – Markus Koy (GER) climbed up to finish second, Heimo and Hermine Schlagbauer (AUT) came in third. Only half of the fleet made it to the finish in time, the other half did not have a chance to complete the race.
